Military records are among the richest sources in genealogy, often containing physical descriptions, next of kin and addresses. Many are free.
Start with national archives
Government archives in the US, UK, Canada and Australia have digitised large collections of service records, often free to view online.
Use FamilySearch
FamilySearch hosts free indexes of draft registrations, pension files and muster rolls.
Check war memorial databases
Commemorative databases record burial places and memorials for those who died in service.
Then consider a subscription
If free sources run dry, a short subscription with a free trial can unlock indexed collections. Plan your searches before the trial starts.
